Come and learn about the discovery of gold in Warrandyte, and how it shaped the township and community. ...
The Warrandyte Historical Society invite you to come and learn about the discovery of gold in Warrandyte and how it shaped the township and community.
Warrandyte is justifiably proud of its place in the gold history of Victoria. Gold was first discovered at Anderson's Creek in June 1851. It was the first officially published goldfield, named the 'Victoria Field', in honour of the new Colony. It was also the first place in the Colony to issue gold mining licences.
This exhibit celebrates the 170th anniversary of the first discovery by Louis John Michel and his team. You'll find interesting and colourful banners on display inside and outside the Museum, showcasing
the discovery of gold and how this has shaped the township and community. They share the lure of gold and excitement around the discovery that continues today.
You can visit to see the outside banners placed on the fence-line of the Museum at any time during the Heritage Festival. To access the banners inside the Museum, please see the exhibition times.
This exhibition is open from 18 April to 22 May 2022.
The indoor exhibition inside the Museum, is open on Sundays, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.
There is both on-street parking, and off-road car parks available on Yarra Street.

We are proud to welcome our new Mayor Councillor Carli Lange - and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Laura Mayne. ...
Let's welcome our new Mayor - Warrandyte resident, school teacher and mother of three, Councillor Carli Lange!
The Yarra Ward Councillor was unanimously elected to the position by her peers at last night’s Annual Meeting (2 November 2023).
Cr Lange is a passionate advocate for the local community with her fellow councillors praising her for her energy, impartiality, empathy and work ethic.
Cr Lange will be supported in her new role by Deputy Mayor, Cr Laura Mayne who was also elected unanimously last night.
Cr L Mayne congratulated Cr Lange and said the new Mayor was truly deserving of the role as a compassionate, community-oriented leader, deeply connected to her community.
“Manningham is so lucky to have someone leading them with a heart as big as Cr Lange,” Cr Mayne said.
This sentiment was echoed by our outgoing Mayor Cr Deirdre Diamante.
“I know you will be a wonderful Mayor. You have a really strong spine and warm heart and that’s what we need in a Mayor. I’m sure your school students will be extremely proud and what an amazing example of a leader you are for them.” Cr Diamante said.
Council CEO, Andrew Day congratulated Cr Lange on behalf of the organisation.
“We will wrap our arms around you and have no doubt you will be up to the challenge. You are approachable and easy to work with. You have a really strong sense of getting the job done and we will do everything we possibly can to make this one of the greatest years of your life!” Mr Day said.
Cr Lange said she was blown away by the support of family, friends and community, and committed to her fellow Councillors priorities of governing with diligence, transparency, inclusivity and efficiency.
Cr Lange added that she would serve with open-mindedness and empathy while upholding the organisation’s values and achieving the growing community’s priorities through the Council Plan.
“We are lucky to live in this city, where we value sustainable, healthy living, a sense of belonging and respect for one another". Cr Lange said.
"Let’s enjoy this year together; let’s bring out the best in each other and let’s work with all levels of government to bring about the best outcomes for our community". "Let’s provide a solid foundation, ensure efficiency and stability. Let me work with you as your Mayor for we are Manningham!” Cr Lange said.
The Councillors and Mr Day thanked outgoing Mayor, Cr Deirdre Diamante for her valued contribution and leadership over the past year.
Cr Diamante lead with poise and passion. Among her many achievements during the Mayoral term, Cr Diamante worked tirelessly to raise awareness and advocate for people living with dementia, her dedication resulting in Manningham’s first dementia-friendly cafe. Cr Diamante’s term also saw the roll out of the Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) and community bus services.
Cr Diamante said it had been an honour to serve as Mayor in the city where she grew up and that she had enjoyed building relationships with community members from all walks of life. Cr Diamante said she particularly enjoyed one-on-one meetings with residents and welcoming 1400 new citizens to Manningham.
“We’ve done a lot of work this year Councillors and we’ve achieved all of this together.”
It’s that exciting time of year when you have an opportunity to review Council’s Draft Budget and proposed 10 Year Financial Plan.
Council endorsed the draft documents at its meeting last night (30 May).
“We surveyed the community about the forthcoming budget over the summer months and used this information to assist in formulating the Draft Budget and 10-year Financial Plan,” Manningham Mayor, Cr Deirdre Diamante said.
“These important documents outline how we will spend your rates on community services and infrastructure, so be sure to check them out.
“We’re delivering for our community with an operating budget of $146 million to provide more than 100 valuable services for Manningham,” the Mayor added.
We’re also delivering on our Council Plan, including:
• $38 million for a healthy community
• $24 million for liveable places and spaces
• $22 million for a resilient environment
• $5 million for a vibrant prosperous economy
• $31 million for a well governed Council
“We are conscious of cost-of-living pressures in our community and propose over $1 million of relief measures by capping the increase to the waste service charge, increasing our low-income rate rebate and introducing subsidies for school holiday programs,” Cr Diamante said.
Although inflation (CPI) is forecast to be at least 4 per cent in 2023-24 Council’s average general rate increase will be in line with the State Government’s rate cap of 3.5 per cent.
“We are continuing to invest in our community infrastructure with an extensive $54 million capital works program to maintain and enhance Council’s $2.5 billion of community assets.”
This this is in addition to the $20 million allocated to maintaining our important community assets.
“We will also deliver on our Climate Emergency Action Plan to reduce the impacts of climate change,” Cr Diamante said.
Proposed capital works spending includes $13 million over the next four years for circular economy (sustainability) initiatives.
Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback on what they would like included in the Draft Budget and 10 Year Financial Plan by completing our survey over summer.
We received more than 200 submissions and in order, your top priorities for Council spending were:
- Parks, reserves and other open spaces
- Maintenance and cleaning of public spaces
- Recycling and waste management
- Roads and traffic/parking management
- Drainage and stormwater management
- Environment and sustainability
- Sport (courts, ovals, fields and pavilions)
