Following a period of extensive community consultation, Manningham Council has endorsed the Green Gully Linear Park Management Plan that will guide the future use, development and maintenance of the popular Templestowe park.
The vision for Green Gully Linear Park is:
Manningham Mayor Cr Jim Grivokostopoulos said that in line with this vision, Council has developed a Management Plan that will see new capital works funding of $1.4 million to protect and improve the park.
“The majority of the recommendations of the draft Management were well received and in particular there was support for the extension of the Green Gully Trail, to link directly with the Mullum Mullum and Main Yarra Trails.”
“The plan also includes the upgrade of the children’s playspace, the provision of fitness equipment, an automated toilet, new barbecue facilities, additional planting and seating and expanded car parking with an automated gate to restrict vehicle access to limited hours.”
Cr Grivokostopoulos said that during the consultation period Council was made aware of a range of community concerns about some of the proposed improvements resulting in a number of alterations to the original draft plan.
“We should be very proud of the new Management Plan that will implement our vision to make Green Gully Linear Park safer, more accessible and available for the enjoyment of the entire Manningham community.”

The final report will be completed by the end of August and will include proposed concept designs and costings. No funding has been sought for the delivery of this project at this stage.
The feasibility study (which includes the Westerfolds Paddle Sports Plan) is being funded through a Community Sports Infrastructure Fund grant from the Victorian Government through Sport and Recreation Victoria, in partnership with Manningham, Banyule and Nillumbik councils, Canoeing Victoria and Melbourne Canoe Club.
As land managers of parts of the site, Parks Victoria and Melbourne Water are key stakeholders in the project.
Major road work is being finalised on local arterial roads in Wonga Park to increase safety and cope with an increasing traffic volume.
Road rehabilitation works are currently being undertaken at:
The rehabilitation of the 1.8km stretch of Homestead and Brushy Park roads is part of Manningham Council’s Road Restoration and Arterial Road Pavements improvement strategies and includes:
Manningham Mayor Cr Paul McLeish said the $900,000 project is jointly funded by the City of Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges, with Manningham Council scoping, planning and managing construction.
“Homestead and Brushy Park roads form a shared boundary between two municipalities and are a vital piece of the local road network catering for approximately 25,000 vehicles a day.”
“The road works will address the failure of the ageing pavement and alleviate many safety concerns from the increasing traffic flow and restricted sightline issues.”
“I would like to thank local residents and motorists for their patience during construction, which is unfortunately being delayed due to the adverse weather,” Cr McLeish said.
Doncaster East residents and passing motorists on Reynolds and Springvale Roads were treated to the spectacular sight of a bridge flying through the air near Currawong Bush Park.
A small crowd of fascinated onlookers witnessed an enormous mobile crane set up for the massive job of lifting the seven tonne pedestrian foot bridge off the back of a transporter, over tree tops and into place across the Mullum Mullum creek.
The installation of the new pedestrian bridge (on 11 November) is part of a $400,000 Manningham Council project to complete the missing links to create a 4.5 kilometre long off-road walking circuit.
Half of the new circuit will be along the Mullum Mullum Trail and the other half on the tracks within Currawong Bush Park (giving direct pedestrian access to the Currawong Conference and Education Centres and the Currawong picnic area).
The project is expected to be completed in early 2015.
The bridge was designed by local structural engineers (BSC Consulting Engineers) and constructed by CopeAg (who won the public tender).

A large part of the Koonung Creek Linear Park and creek corridor will be occupied for construction activities and compounds for up to 6 years. Covering and shading sections of the creek will degrade and potentially destroy the aquatic habitat and create additional barriers to fish passage. Up to 15,800 trees will be removed and an additional 10,000 trees affected. Open spaces at Bulleen Park will be diminished and a 40 metre ventilation stack will tower over Bulleen Park.
The historic 300 year old River Red Gum on Bridge Street in Bulleen is in the direct line of NEL and must be protected. This tree is a local landmark, pre-dates European settlement and is an important example of our environmental heritage.
Residents in Estelle Street, Bulleen will lose the reserve opposite their homes. This large green space will become a construction site, with a 10 metre high noise wall to then be constructed with a 20 lane freeway behind it. The expanded freeway will bring more noise and pollution and the sound wall will close residents in. We believe this footprint for the construction activities is excessive and should be scaled back.

Children can once again ride kangaroos, befriend wombats, emus and other characters under the watchful eye of Grandma at the refurbished Gooligulch Playspace in Wonga Park.
Manningham’s refurbishment of the much loved playspace, based on Graeme Base’s book, My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch, is now complete with an official opening scheduled for 4.00pm to 5.30pm, Wednesday 15 December.
Manningham Mayor Cr Michelle Kleinert said the refurbishment was a successful collaboration between Council, author Graeme Base and the original Gooligulch creative team, featuring artists, fabricators and suppliers.
“We listened to the community and worked together to preserve the park’s distinctly Australian theme, inspired by the book,” she said.
“The refurbished park will ensure new generations of children can experience this unique story and iconic playspace for years to come.”
The refurbishment include a renovated house for Grandma, refurbished play units for children, and reinstated art panels, improved seating, landscaping, picnic areas and signage for everyone.
The official opening will include storytelling, hearing from the original creative team and Christmas decoration for Grandma’s house.
The upgrade is part of Manningham’s Parks Improvement Program.
“Thank you to our community for their patience over the last few months as we complete the refurbishment,” Cr Kleinert said.

A community art project is breathing new life into the car park at Tunstall Square Shopping Centre in Doncaster East.
Manningham Council is working with the shopping centre to turn the car park into an artist’s canvas.
Local artists and a range of schools and community organisations have been invited to paint designs directly onto the asphalt across two rows of car parking spaces. A local artist is helping to bring these creations to life.
Manningham Mayor Cr Andrew Conlon said: “There’s a wealth of creative talent in our region and this art project is yet another way to showcase these skills while improving the visual landscape of the shopping centre.”
“Come down and check out the masterpieces at Tunstall Square Shopping Centre on the corner of Tunstall and Doncaster Roads in Doncaster East,” he said.
Tunstall Square West Shopping Centre Manager, Irene Goonan, said that this was the first time something like this has been done in Australia and the community could join in the fun of watching these masterpieces being created.
The majority of painting will be on Sunday 9 and 16 September. The public is welcome to attend.
Two parking aisles will be closed on either side of the main walkway at the shopping centre until Thursday 20 September while the project is underway.
Stage two of construction of the play space at wonguim wilam, Warrandyte, will begin on Tuesday, 15 March.
“Stage one created new open space parklands, picnic spaces, an exercise station and a renewed car park. This next stage is even more exciting. This is all for the children! They will love the new play space, and the artwork will add even more colour and vibrance to this beautiful area,” said Mayor Cr Michelle Kleinert.
The upgrade will include:
“Warrandyte is a passionate community with great appreciation and respect for its heritage. The new play space is designed to connect children with nature and offer play opportunities for children of all ages and abilities,” said Cr Kleinert.
The pathway through the play space will be closed during the construction, which is expected to take around three months, depending on potential weather delays.
The Victorian Government supports this project through the Local Parks Revitalisation Program contributing $300,000 to the project, with Council allocating $700,000 in its annual capital works budget.

Manningham Council has made changes to dog controls in the Warrandyte River Reserve to ensure dogs remain on lead near the Warrandyte Bridge including the recently upgraded Lions Park area.
The change has been introduced to support safety for residents and visitors to this area and those enjoying the newly upgraded community facilities within the reserve.
Dogs must be on lead within the newly designated on lead area, which is a 260 metre section of the Warrandyte River Reserve, between 183 Yarra Street and the Warrandyte Bridge.
The new on lead area is in accordance with Council’s resolution in September 2020, which introduced
across Manningham. This order was introduced in line with the Domestic Animals Act 1994.
There are still sections within the Warrandyte River Reserve that are designated as off lead areas.
In Manningham, dogs are only permitted off lead in designated areas providing the dog is kept under control at all times. Dogs must be on lead within 15 metres of:
There can be penalties for owners who let their dog off their lead in areas where it is not permitted.
It is important to note that dogs are not permitted within the Federation Playspace area of this reserve.

Playspaces at Lynnwood Reserve in Templestowe Lower, Allara Reserve in Donvale and two Doncaster East play areas at Thea Reserve and Dehnert Reserve, have all had extensive upgrades or makeovers to provide many more options for playing kids, with some additional attractions for older visitors.
Lynnwood Reserve
The playspace and park in Templestowe Lower has had a major upgrade with a new play area created to cater for all ages and abilities. A distinctive 20 metre-long snake sculpture sits as the centrepiece and even glows in the dark. Play equipment include a six-way swing set – the first of its kind in Manningham – as well as a multi climbing and slide unit, basket swing, spinning pole and more.
Upgraded concrete paths now provide a 500 metre circuit for bikes, scooters and walkers, which links to a new round multi-purpose court. A series of interesting animal sculptures and a community herb garden will also be installed soon.
Allara Reserve
Improvements at Allara Reserve include colourful and adventurous play equipment complete with a high rope climbing cube, tunnel slide, triple swing set, junior slide and a cubby house with activity panels that cater for all ages. Landscaping, new seating, a drinking fountain and newly planted trees added to the appeal of this local park in Donvale.
Thea Reserve
A new fairy-themed playspace has been created at Thea Reserve in Doncaster East with a rock circle under the wonderful oak trees, new play equipment, balancing logs, a dry creek bed and new trees and shrubs. A new path, drinking fountain, seats and picnic tables make this a great space for young and old to enjoy at any time of the year.
A timber sculpture, new bridge and gateway arch are still to come as part of this playspace upgrade.
Dehnert Reserve
This popular park on George Street in Doncaster East is close to Doncaster Gardens Primary School has had a landscape makeover with a new concrete path, bridge, a rock sitting circle under shady trees as well as more trees and plants. A new triple swing set and rope climbing unit have been added to the existing play equipment and there’s new seating and picnic area to enjoy.
