Join us this NAIDOC week for a special screening of the Unfinished Business Documentary at Doncaster Library.
This moving documentary tells the stories of 30 First Nations people living with disabilities. Their deeply personal stories are complex and intertwined with Australia’s political and social history, which has resulted in today’s unacceptably high rates of disability in Australia’s First Nations Communities.
Their stories are also featured in the Unfinished Business exhibition, which is showing at Manningham Art Gallery until Saturday 29 July.
Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with Uncle John Baxter: Latja Latja/Narungga man, Board Member Reconciliation Victoria and First Peoples Disability Network, Aboriginal Partnership Coordinator - Brotherhood of St Laurence/NDIS, participant and creative collaborator of Unfinished Business.
Attendees will also have the chance to view the exhibition at their own pace.
The Unfinished Business Documentary is a creative collaboration between brothers, Liam and Dieter Knierim, Belinda Mason Knierim OAM, and participants.
This is a free and accessible event. Bookings not required. Refreshments will be provided.
Warning: First Nations peoples should be aware that this exhibition contains images, voices, or names of deceased persons.
If you require an Auslan interpreter to attend this event, please let us know by Friday 30 June, at 9840 9367 or gallery@manningham.vic.gov.au.

Manningham Council has adopted the Vibrant Villages Action Plan 2023, which sets out our plan for the upgrade of public spaces in our local shopping centres.
This Action Plan identifies shopping centres for a range of upgrades and improvements to make them more vibrant, with a focus on priorities over the next ten years.
These upgrades may include:
- landscaping
- outdoor seating
- footpath improvements
- outdoor tables
- parklets
- bicycle infrastructure
- traffic improvements
- drainage improvements and water sensitive urban design,
- carparking improvements
- and structure planning.
Manningham Mayor Cr Deirdre Diamante said Manningham’s activity centres provide an important role within the community.
“They offer shops, community facilities and services that meet the daily needs of local residents. They provide a place of employment for many. They also offer an opportunity for people to gather and interact, which is so important for community connection and a feeling of belonging.”
“Our centres need to be of a high standard to continue to draw people to them, which in turn benefits our local traders. They need to be safe, accessible and pleasant places to visit and shop.
That’s why this Vibrant Villages Plan is so important – it sets out a framework and plan for ensuring we can keep our centres across Manningham thriving to their full potential.”
Cr Diamante said small improvements to centres like seating, car parking, landscape, footpaths and lighting can impact the use, function and enjoyment of an activity centre.
“This Plan will help us make sure we manage the appearance and function of centres to meet the needs of our community both now and in the future.”
We will focus on:
Neighbourhood Activity Centres: (in no particular order)
- Donburn
- Jackson Court
- Macedon Square (safety and amenity works only)
- Templestowe Village
Local Activity Centres:
- Mitcham Road, Donvale
- Thompson Heights, Bulleen
- Whittens Lane, Doncaster
- Feathertop Avenue, Templestowe Lower
- Bulleen Road, Bulleen
- Village Avenue, Doncaster
- Rosella Street, Doncaster East
- Templestowe Road at Bridge Road, Bulleen
- Chatsworth Quadrant, Templestowe Lower
- JJ Tully Drive, Doncaster
Engagement with stakeholders will be undertaken at the time when individual Neighbourhood and Local Activity Centres are to be upgraded.
You can read the Vibrant Villages Plan on our website under Action Plans – Property and Development
Over the final two weeks of Australia’s first COVID-19 lockdown period in March, April and May 2020, photographers Bill McAuley and David Wadelton were commissioned by Manningham Council to capture how our community responded to this important historical moment. Empty Streets and Stacked Chairs is an exhibition of some of the most poignant photographs from that commission.
A blend of quiet shopping centres, masked baristas, shut-up shops, plastic wrap, ad-hoc signage and busy walking tracks, the photos are an ambiguous tale of fear, adaptation, disappointment, hope, worry and perseverance. They convey the sense of calm that descended on our community as, like the rest of the country, we collectively paused to survey our current and future lives, and took to exercising, learning new skills and exploring new ways to do old things. But they also speak to experiences of isolation and opportunity lost, to the negative financial impacts of the lockdown and to the disruption of everyday activities that we can take for granted, like sitting down for a coffee or taking kids to the playground.
The photos also form an engaging record due to the perspectives of the photographers. While Wadelton’s images are a sensitive and revealing portrait of the physical texture and shape Manningham’s streets, houses and shops, McAuley’s focus in large part on the human stories and encourage reflection of the impact measures like mask wearing and social distancing can have. Together, they are a fascinating contribution to the story of a point in time that will be felt for many years to come.

Manningham Art Gallery
Located at the entrance to MC Square, Manningham Art Gallery presents a diverse range of contemporary art exhibitions and related public programs throughout the year. See all upcoming exhibitions.
The Warrandyte Historical Society invite you to come and learn about the discovery of gold in Warrandyte and how it shaped the township and community.
Warrandyte is justifiably proud of its place in the gold history of Victoria. Gold was first discovered at Anderson's Creek in June 1851. It was the first officially published goldfield, named the 'Victoria Field', in honour of the new Colony. It was also the first place in the Colony to issue gold mining licences.
This exhibit celebrates the 170th anniversary of the first discovery by Louis John Michel and his team. You'll find interesting and colourful banners on display inside and outside the Museum, showcasing
the discovery of gold and how this has shaped the township and community. They share the lure of gold and excitement around the discovery that continues today.
You can visit to see the outside banners placed on the fence-line of the Museum at any time during the Heritage Festival. To access the banners inside the Museum, please see the exhibition times.
This exhibition is open from 18 April to 22 May 2022.
The indoor exhibition inside the Museum, is open on Sundays, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.
There is both on-street parking, and off-road car parks available on Yarra Street.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Council Meetings
As part of our efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 we have reviewed our Council meeting practices to ensure we provide a safe environment for Councillors, staff and the community. Pursuant to the Local Government Act 2020, Council meetings will be held virtually until further notice. Physical attendance by members of the public at Council meetings is currently not permitted. Council meetings will continue to be live streamed and we encourage you to follow the meeting on our Facebook page (you can view the livestream on our Facebook page even if you don’t have a Facebook account). The live stream is not interactive. Any comments or private messages directed to us while the stream is live will not be presented to Council or have a bearing on the conduct of the meeting.
Council acknowledges that in the lead up to its general elections, it will not make any decision that would, or could be perceived to, inappropriately bind an incoming Council or affect the outcome of the elections.
As per our Election Period Policy, Council will hold an Ordinary meeting in October to consider routine administrative matters and the Annual Report. There will be limitations on the conduct of the meeting such as no public question time, tabling of petitions and Councillor question time.
